Alan moore restera celui qui aura été la vision ultime dans l'histoire du personnage. Dans "the anatomy lesson", Swamp Thing couche avec Abby Arcane. Il nous concocte une histoire de vampire plus à l'aise à vivre dans l'eau que sur terre. Puis il nous concocte une histoire de loup garou dans "the curse" qu'il relie avec les menstruations. Il écrit aussi une histoire de zombie qu'il terminera avec un Zombie trouvant un job confiné au guichet d'un cinéma avec comme argument final que l'esclavage n'est pas mort mais a trouvé sa forme dans certains métiers.

Rick Veitch lui s'est servit de Swamp Thing pour disséquer la culture américaine et ses corporations. Veitch s'est aussi servit des super héros pour analyser leur impact culturel et leurs coté psychotique. Sa façon de narrer l'histoire ressemble au Watchmen puisque les histoires et les coïncidences se multiplient et se recoupent. Veitch nous a aussi livré un Jésus dépeint comme un magicien blanc dans une histoire nous faisant réfléchir sur l'art et la religion et l'argent autour.

Millar, a joué sur le thème de l'inceste avec Abby et son oncle démoniaque. Il a aussi enlevé aussi tous le coté humain de Swamp Thing pour le transcender.
